Practical guidance

Fit the packaging to the folded garment

Decide how the garment will be folded before choosing the packaging dimensions. A T-shirt, a structured jacket and a delicate accessory need different allowances. Include any protective layer and consider the number of items commonly bought together.

For a shop, think about carrying comfort and the presentation at the counter. For online orders, include the outer shipping pack and the way the garment stays in position. One branded detail can remain consistent across both channels without forcing the same packaging structure.

Work through your brief

01

Make tissue part of the presentation

Wrapping tissue can protect the presentation and introduce a brand colour or repeating logo. It is not the same material as food-contact greaseproof paper. Choose the sheet size around the folded garment and the number of folds the packing team will make.

Discuss colour transfer or surface sensitivity if the garment is delicate or pale. Test the proposed tissue and printed construction with the real product where that matters to your range.

02

Use swing tags for useful information

A tag can introduce the brand, show a size or price, or carry a barcode. Leave enough space for the information that changes across styles and seasons. Agree the hole position, attachment method and how the tag will sit on the garment.

Keep care or product claims accurate and consistent with your approved information. The tag design should support that content rather than squeeze essential text into a decorative corner.

03

Plan paper bags around weight and shape

Measure the packed garment or gift box, then allow a comfortable fit in the bag. Choose handle style and length with the customer’s carrying experience in mind. A large bag holding a light knit and a smaller bag holding several dense items can place different demands on the construction.

Share the approximate load when requesting a quote. Paper weight alone does not describe the performance of a complete bag, so confirm the proposed construction and test it for the intended use.

04

Keep launches and repeat runs organised

List the artwork versions, colour references and quantities needed for each collection. A seasonal thank you card can change while the main bag or box remains consistent. That can help avoid tying every printed component to a short campaign.

Keep the final proofs and specifications together. When a size, logo or web address changes, make the new version explicit so an old file is not used by accident.
