Custom Subscription Boxes packaging example

Consider the details

Design for the whole subscription.

Subscription packaging has to work more than once. The contents may change each month, but the customer should still recognise the brand and understand how to unpack the delivery. A useful brief covers the largest and smallest likely product combinations, not only the launch box.

Share the product range, approximate packed weights, dispatch method and expected order quantities. We will help you discuss a box format and internal arrangement that suit the way the subscription is packed and sent.

Details worth deciding early

01

Plan around variations

List the items that are likely to appear together and identify unusually large, heavy or fragile products. Decide whether one box can handle most orders without excessive empty space. A second format may be more practical than using a large box for every delivery.

If the selection changes regularly, consider how dividers, tissue or insert cards can adapt while the outer branding stays consistent. Document which combinations need extra protection so the packing team does not have to improvise each time.

02

Think about the packing bench

Measure how long it takes to assemble the box, place the contents and close the pack. Attractive packaging can become expensive to use if it introduces several slow steps at every dispatch. A trial with the actual team is more revealing than an empty sample alone.

Consider where labels, batch information and the address will sit. Leave the shipping label in a practical area without covering the most important brand detail. Check that the closure works with the chosen dispatch method.

03

Give the customer useful information

A monthly insert can introduce the contents, explain care or use, and provide a simple route to support. It can also carry information that changes without requiring new outer-box artwork for every dispatch. Keep the wording concise and relevant to that edition.

If you use a QR code, send customers to a page that matches the delivery. Avoid changing a destination in a way that makes old boxes confusing. A readable URL or support address is useful alongside a code.

04

Compare the complete delivered cost

Box size, packed weight, protective materials, assembly time and shipping arrangements all contribute to the cost. A slightly different format may reduce wasted space or simplify packing even if the empty box price is higher.

Ask for alternative quantities and constructions to be compared on the same basis. Agree the artwork version, material and delivery schedule for each run so the subscription can remain consistent as volumes change.
