Consider the details
Brown kraft paper represents authenticity, sustainability, and industrial strength. Produced from unbleached virgin wood pulp or 100% post-consumer recycled paper, its long wood fibres provide exceptional burst strength and puncture resistance. Ideal for postal wrapping, gift wrapping with rustic twine, and protecting products in transit.

Derived from the German word for ‘strength’, kraft paper has long been the backbone of heavy industrial packaging and reliable parcel protection. Manufactured through the sulphate chemical pulping process, virgin kraft retains long, unbleached softwood fibres that confer superior tensile strength, burst resistance, and puncture durability compared to all other paper substrates. For 40 years, QPack has supplied British distribution networks, engineering works, and artisan retailers with high-performance ribbed, smooth, and heavyweight kraft sheets engineered to survive the rigours of domestic courier handling and international freight.
Why virgin softwood kraft outperforms recycled paper under courier impact:
Selecting the exact grammage for your specific shipping weight threshold:
Mastering ink absorption and colour reproduction on natural unbleached fibres:
Reinforcing your brand’s circular economy and plastic-reduction commitments:

Kraft paper is produced using the 'Kraft process' (invented by Carl F. Dahl), which uses chemical sulphate pulping rather than mechanical grinding. This process preserves the long cellulose fibres of virgin softwood trees and dissolves lignin (the natural wood glue that makes standard paper brittle). The result is an extraordinarily tough, pliable sheet with dramatically higher tear, tensile, and burst resistance under courier transit stress.
Ribbed kraft features prominent linear ridges pressed into the paper during the paper machine glazed (MG) drying cylinder process; these ribs provide structural rigidity, directional tear resistance, and a distinctive traditional aesthetic. Smooth kraft is calendered between polished rollers to create a flat, uniform surface that is better suited for fine detail logo printing and tape adhesion.
Yes. We operate specialised wide-web flexographic printing presses designed specifically for porous kraft papers. Using high-density water-based inks, we can print single-colour, two-colour, or full-coverage patterns including logos, eco certification badges, QR codes, and custom handling instructions.
For general retail and e-commerce parcels weighing up to 5kg, 70gsm to 90gsm virgin kraft provides ample burst resistance. For heavier parcels, industrial metal fittings, or products with sharp rigid corners up to 15kg+, we recommend our 120gsm or 140gsm heavyweight kraft sheets.
Pallet layer pads (ranging from 140gsm heavyweight kraft up to 300gsm solid kraft liner) are placed between tiers of cardboard boxes or sacks stacked on a wooden pallet. They distribute top-down weight evenly across lower layers, prevent carton sagging, and introduce high-friction interlocking that stops boxes from shifting during lorry transport.
Yes, 100%. Our unprinted and water-based printed kraft papers contain no plastic coatings or toxic chemicals. They are 100% recyclable in domestic UK council paper collections and are home compostable, breaking down completely into natural organic matter within 6 to 12 weeks.
Our UK packaging specialists can verify bottle clearances, create tailored structural CAD dielines, and supply physical plain samples.
