Practical guidance
Ecommerce packaging has several jobs: hold the product, survive handling, make the brand recognisable and remain practical for the team sending it. Begin with the contents and dispatch method. A lightweight textile order and a fragile glass gift set should not inherit the same specification just because they share a logo.
List your common order combinations and packed weights. Include any items that create unusual shapes or need separation. This gives you a useful starting point for choosing one box size, a small range of formats or a combination of packaging types.

Measure the product with its retail packaging, inner wrap and any insert. Agree whether a proposed box size is internal or external. The outside dimensions and final packed weight matter to your chosen delivery service, so check its current limits before committing to a format.
Avoid selecting a box only from a product photograph. A packing trial with the actual contents will show whether the size allows practical assembly, sufficient support and an easy opening experience.
Tissue, a branded label and a thank you card can create a consistent impression without requiring every surface to be printed. Choose the details that are useful to the customer: care information, a support address or a clear introduction to the brand.
Give shipping labels and seals a planned location. Important artwork should not disappear under the carrier label. If you use internal printing, check what remains visible once the product and protective materials are in place.
The empty box price is only one part of the job. Include protective materials, assembly time, storage space, waste and the delivery arrangement. A trial can help you spot a construction that takes too long to prepare or uses more filler than expected.
Ask for like-for-like specifications when comparing quotations. Keep material, dimensions, print coverage, quantities and delivery terms visible so you can understand what changes between options.
Keep the approved artwork and specification together, including any insert and print version. Record which product combinations use each pack. When volumes increase or the range changes, review the fit before simply reordering a larger quantity.
The best brief also includes your required arrival date and delivery location. Confirm the schedule for the agreed specification rather than assuming a production time quoted for a different product applies.
